Hunting Survival Knives

Article Submitted by: karle donald

If you're an experienced hunter, you probably know that purchasing cheap hunting and survival equipment is not always the best idea. If you're out in the wilderness faced in a survival situation you don't want to be wishing you had spent a few extra bucks for your hunting survival knife. A good quality hunting survival knife is quite likely the most important survival tool an avid outdoorsman can on hand. If forced in the face of danger or just needing to survive, a quality survival knife can literally mean life or death. Not all knives are created equal. Many cheap survival knives claim to be able to do just as well as there more expensive counterparts. But when it comes to survival knives, a cheap knife means a low quality knife. Many hunting survival knives on the market today have hollow handles, which are attached to the base of the blade in different ways. Yes, the hollow handles allow for storage, which is nice if you need to start a fire or pull out a few feet of fishing line, but if faced in a real survival situation these knives can and will fail. A survival knife with a full tang blade is the knife of choice, as the steel of the blade and the handle are one piece. This makes for a very sturdy knife. Another option that's convenient to have when looking for a hunting survival knife is a serrated edge. This edge comes in handy if you need to saw wood for a fire in your survival situation. A fixed blade knife may be a little more cumbersome to carry than a pocketknife but if put into a survival situation it will perform too perfection.

You can and should carry more than one knife and a pocketknife could be a nice companion. If you're limited to carrying just a few items a fixed blade hunting survival knife is your best option.

The best way to carry your survival knife is in a sheath. There are many good quality sheaths on the market today. The most common is a sheath that will strap to a belt. You should purchase a belt sheath that also ties around your leg, this will keep the knife tight to your body and not become a possible injury. All in all a quality fixed blade hunting survival knife is a great tool to have when hunting or camping in the wilderness. R. Elam owns and operates a Survival Knife Shop Survival knives.
